IPG集团的历史可以追溯到1902年阿尔佛雷德W.埃里克森广告公司的创办，哈里森•麦肯于1911年创办了H.K.麦肯广告公司；而后在1930年，两家公司合并成麦肯-埃里克森广告公司。1960年，在麦肯环球广告的基础上成立了控股集团Interpublic Inc.(简称IPG，互众集团)，当时其旗下主要有两家竞争性的广告公司：麦肯环球和Marschalk & Pratt。而后，IPG集团进行了一系列好斗的并购，最终在1971年成为上市公司。
IPG下一步就是寻找合适的收购对象——灵狮。
1928年，联合利华（ Unilever ）下属的广告公司—— Lintas （ Lever International Advertising Services ，灵狮）成立。Frank Lowe 在1981年在伦敦创建 Lowe 集团，1990 年该集团被IPG收购。1999年，Lowe & Partners 与 Lintas合并；2000年改名为Lowe Lintas & Partners Worldwide ；2002 年1 月，又改名为 Lowe & Partners Worldwide（励富）。
2001年3月，在经过了与Havas的一番角逐后，IPG以21亿美元收购TrueNorth传播集团。世界广告史上的元老之一的 FCB（美格）正式被纳入IPG 的帐下。
目前IPG主要包括麦肯环球集团（McCann-Erickson ）、DraftFCB集团和Lowe环球广告三大创意网络以及包括优势麦肯和极致媒体的两大媒介代理网络，万博宣伟（Weber Shandwich）和高诚公关在内的公关网络等等一系列市场行销传播公司。
