生于纽约市。他有不少小说被拍成电影，有很多是自己或与妹妹宝琳一起改编成电影剧本。1942年编剧的《国族之光》（又译《美国佬的骄傲》），获奥斯卡最佳原著故事金像奖提名。1972年福斯公司摄制的优秀灾难片《海神号遇难记》也是根据他的小说改编的。其它主要还有《赤胆忠心》、《钟》、《孤凤奇缘》、《几乎没有时间》等。1976年7月去世。
