出生于华盛顿。父亲是马戏团的小丑演员。8岁时全家移居伦敦，先后在英国和法国就读。1907年，她前往纽约，与约翰．德鲁克合演了舞台剧《我的妻子》，并以此蜚声百老汇。1915年，以《佩吉》步入影坛，此后又连续主演了12部无声片。期间与歌舞演员兼舞台监督齐格菲结婚。进入有声片时代，她又相续出演了几十部影片，但多数演一些轻浮浅薄、唠唠叻叻的喜剧人物。1949年，她出版了自传《我鼻子上的羽毛》。
