沈月林于2004年获得波士顿大学工商管理博士，专业为运营管理。他目前的主要研究领域为供应链和物流管理。他的教学兴趣在运筹学,运营管理,服务运营管理和供应链管理等。
他的学术生涯始于物理学，于1991年在复旦大学获物理学士学位，于1994年在北京师范大学获物理硕士学位，于1994-1997年在南开大学陈省身数学研究所攻读理论物理博士学位，未获学位而赴美留学。他在理论物理中发表七篇文章于国际性刊物和三篇文章于中国刊物。留美后他的兴趣很快转向应用学科从而最终获得了管理学博士学位。
他于2004年至2006年任教于马来西亚科技大学，于2006年至2007年任教于澳门科技大学。他于2007年加入上海财经大学,并授予博士指导资格。
他曾经在Intel和Optiant Inc.从事供应链数学建模与软件开发工作。
