剧情简介在十九世纪晚期，伊斯特·康和她的父母一起住在伦敦。她的父母是犹太移民，在一家家庭式的血汗作坊里卖命。
伊斯特生性迟钝而又木讷，对任何事情都从来没有过自己的想法，也从来没有对任何人，任何事物产生过感情。她，就象一块石头。然而她却有那么一种力量带领着我们去探求那些看来只有哲学家们才会去伤脑筋的问题：如果我们可以做梦，那么我又怎么能够确定这个世界是确实存在的？如果我们所做的一切都只是一种模仿，那么真正的生命又是什么样子的呢？那里才有真正的生活呢？
在她艰难地模仿别人去生活的过程中，她认识到，这样的努力并不能帮她变成一个有血有肉的人。但在一次偶然的机会下，伊斯特终于醒觉，从石头般的生活中复苏了：原来在观看戏剧时，她不象别人一样仅仅旁观一切，而是实实在在地活在那戏剧里。于是，伊斯特决心当一个演员。
她从新开始学习如何表演，也学习如何生活。也正是因为这些课程，在一天夜里，在舞台上，就在那么一瞬间，她终于释放出了20年来压抑着的生命……
幕后制作这种人物的生平传奇片强调角色的痴迷和执着精神，没有过多的煽情镜头，始终用一种疏离的方式来保持生平叙述，在叙述过程中夹杂着导演的评论和意见。其中角色魅力起了很大的作用，特别是在表现她因为失败的爱情而使自己的艺术表演水平得到飞跃的情节，极富神采。
