It is the year 2029: Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) boards a pod cruiser on a Space Station for a "routine" reconnaissance mission. But an aburupt detour through a space time wormhole lands him on a strange planet where talking apes rule over the human race. With the help of a sympathetic chimpanzee activist named Ari (Helena Bonham-Carter) and a small band of human rebels, Leo leads the effort to evade the advancing Gorilla Army led by General Thade (Tim Roth) and his most trusted warrior Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan). Now the race is on to reach a sacred temple within the planet's Forbidden Zone to discover the shocking secrets of mankind's past - and the key to its future.

人猿星球系列好莱坞在1968年拍摄的《人猿星球》取材于法国作家Pierre Boulle的著名同名科幻小说。当时影片以构思奇特的情节、精妙逼真的化装、出色的现代派音乐、出乎意料颇感震撼的结局而大受欢迎，也催生了其后的4部续集和2部电视剧集的诞生。2001年的重拍版的《人猿星球》则完全走商业路线，颇具观赏性。
《人猿星球/人猿世界》（Planet of the Apes）1968年
1971年，泰勒带队乘着飞船离开地球去探索外星文明。在太空遨游了2000年后，飞船着陆在一个陌生的星球上。泰勒在飞船里苏醒后，他发现在这个星球上的人类和动物没什么区别，而人猿是这里的统治者。泰勒和人猿科学家兹拉、科尼斯以及原始人类诺娃交上了朋友，但他却受到人猿博士赞斯的百般迫害。最后泰勒逃出了人猿的控制，当他在海滩上探索前进时，却突然看到了半掩在沙滩边的自由女神像！他恍然大悟，原来这个被人猿统治的星球正是多年以后的地球，人类已用核武器毁灭了自己的文明并从此退化，而人猿却进化了……影片影射当时美国的种族歧视制度，并通过一个倒置进化链的假设，尖锐地批判了渗透在各个社会的等级制度。影片涉及到政治、宗教、伦理、科学、核武器等多个层面，但中心思想是：你要别人怎样对待你，你就该这么对待他人。
《失陷猩球》（Beneath the Planet of the Apes）1970年
另一艘跟随着泰勒的飞船同样回到了地球上，幸存者布朗克遇上了诺娃，于是一起去寻找在人猿禁区失踪的泰勒。他们先到人猿部落找兹拉、科尼斯了解情况，并得知人猿即将入侵禁区。在逃避人猿追捕时，他们闯入禁区地下废墟，在那里还生存着一些畸变后的人类，他们身体虚弱，可以使用精神力量，奉行核弹宗教。在布朗克、诺娃、泰勒在监牢里会合同时，人猿大军侵入了禁区，由于精神力量对智力较低的人猿大脑没什么作用，禁区里的人类全军覆没，而诺娃、布朗克、泰勒相继被杀死。泰勒临死之前启动核弹，地球毁灭。
