Morerecentgovernmentshavetakentheaxetothemoresurprisedschemesthatencouragedpeopletodestroytherainforest．BesidesBrazil’stoughconservationlaws，therearenowcountlessprojects，oftenbackedbymultilateralagencies，todevelopsustainableforestry，eco-tourismandothermeansofprovidingalivingfortheregion’sinhabitantswithoutharmingtheirenvironment．MatoGrossostatehaspioneeredtheuseofsatellite-mappingtoenforcealawthatobligesAmazonia’slandownerstoleave80％offorestedlanduntouched．Police，environmentaIinspectorsandotherstateagenciesarebeingpressedtoworktogethermorecloselytoclampdownonillegallogging．
Nevertheless，thepriorityofBrazil’sPresidentLuladaSilvaandhisgovernmentistocutpoverty-andtheyknowthatthesurestwaytoachievethisisthroughstrongeconomicgrowth．So，astheBR-163highwayprojectdemonstrates，conservationstillcomessecondtoeconomicdevelopment．Themanysustainableforestryschemesareseekingwaystohavebothinsteadofhavingtochooseoneortheother．Butwhilesomearehighlypromising，takentogethertheyhavesofarhadmuchlessimpactthanmighthavebeenhoped．
