UNICEF Office for China
For 25 years we have worked in partnership with the Chinese
government to realize children's rights, primarily by supporting the
provision of basic services such as health care and education. That
support improves children's daily lives in such diverse areas as
immunization, early childhood development, education, sanitation and
hygiene, access to clean water, microcredit for poor rural women, and
emergency preparedness and response. UNICEF's accomplishments in those
areas are described in detail elsewhere on this website.
The spectacular growth of the Chinese economy has continued for most
of the last decade with annual rates of 7 to 8 percent. Rapid growth and
continued reform present an encouraging backdrop against which to
measure changes in the situation of children and women. The key goal at
this stage is to ensure economic growth is managed in a way that
benefits all Chinese people, including children.
UNICEF's work is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from
governments, individuals, businesses, and foundations. It derives over
one-third of its US $1.7 billion annual income from the private sector.
