Since the 17th century, the district of Beylerbeyi boasted a number of summer palaces built by various Ottoman Sultans. The Beylerbeyi Palace built by Mahmut II was designed by Kirkor Amira Balyan to take on the official functions of the Topkapi Palace. The Palace, constructed entirely from timber, was partially damaged by a fire during the reign of Abdulmecid. His successor Abdulaziz had the entire timber structure demolished and constructed a marble-and-stone palace on the same spot which was designed by Agop and Salkis Balyan.
The main building of the Beylerbeyi Palace, which consists of two main sections: the Harem and the Ceremonial, was surrounded by lesser structures such as the Yellow Mansion, the Pasa Apartments, the Music Apartments, the Deer House, the Pigeon Sanctuary, the Greater Aviary, the Lion House, the Imperial Stables and the Marble Pavillion. Surrounding the palace there was an area of 160,000 square meters comprising a hunting area, a zoo and a garden with different flora from all over the world.
The Imperial Stables was renowned for its arches shaped like horseshoes and the bronze statue of Abdulaziz's favourite steed that stood before its gates.
Beylerbeyi impressed many visiting dignitaries, including the Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III who visited Beylerbeyi in 1869. She had the windows in the guest room duplicated for her bedroom in the Tuilleries Palace in France.
