古生物学家发现弗氏皮亚尼兹基龙(piatnitzkysaurus floresi)这类中侏罗世的兽脚类有着特殊的脑壳构造，最为突出的是它们极为短窄的基蝶状骨横突(basipterygoid processes)，欧洲的皮尔逖龙(piveteausaurus)也发现了这个特征，说明这是一类兽脚类共同所有的派生性状。
