皮克斯通(John V．Pickstone)，出生于英国伯恩利。先学生理学，后在伦敦切尔西学院获得哲学博士学位。博士论文研究法国19世纪早期的普通生理学。在美国明尼苏达大学两年之后，于1974年到英国曼彻斯特大学研究医院史。1986年，他创建了曼彻斯特大学科学、技术和医学史中心，现为该中心韦尔科姆研究教授。其著作广泛涉及生物医学科学史、英国科学和医学的社会史及卫生保健和医疗技术的近期历史。
