幕后制作根据阿根廷小说改编拍摄，是巴西名导演阿尔特里欧执导的第一部英语片，成绩卓越。全片大部分篇幅是在地方狭小的牢房中发生，但因剧本扎实，演员出色，看来一点都不会沉闷。导演还将蜘蛛女的部分拍出幻想气氛。威廉·赫特塑造的同性恋者举手投足都是戏，因而获奥斯卡最佳男主角奖；他后来发现演对手戏的演员不仅能演自己的角色，而且演得比他更好，只不过被他抢到了这个更富表现力的角色。该片后来被改编为百老汇歌舞剧。
剧情简介故事以拉丁美洲的一所监狱为背景，娘娘腔的同性恋者莫琳娜因猥褒少年而入狱，他整天沉浸在好莱坞电影的回忆中，而同处一室的瓦伦丁是墨西哥革命党人，一心想着闹革命，对儿女私情似乎不放在眼里，更别说同性恋之情了。两个性格与世界观截然不同的男人在长久相处之下逐渐变得互相理解、互相同情，发展出一段感人的亲密关系
