本书在回顾学术界隐喻研究的基础上，以当代认知语言学和功能语言学为理论框架，从社会文化这一新颖的角度考察科学语篇的隐喻性质。为了论证科学语篇的隐喻性质，本书首先讨论科学和诗学及修辞之间的关系。研究的核心问题是科学语篇中词汇隐喻和语法隐喻的表现形式、功能、特征以及两类隐喻的互补性。从中可以看出隐喻之所以在貌似客观的科学语篇中随处可见，是因为隐喻在科学探索和科学思想传播过程中都发挥了不可或缺的作用。该研究为审视科学本质和解读科学语篇提供了新的思路。
