Ebdon reached the quarter-finals of three ranking events last season – but was unable to add to his collection of silverware.

He played perhaps his best snooker of the campaign at the Royal London Watches Grand Prix, winning all five of his round robin matches. He also came within two pots of his first maximum break for 15 years – missing the final pink with a 147 at his mercy. Ebdon went on to beat Barry Hawkins in the last 16 before losing to Shaun Murphy.

At the Northern Ireland Trophy, Ebdon knocked out Adrian Gunnell and Steve Davis before Murphy again denied him a semi-final berth.

Ebdon has a fine record at the 888.com World Snooker Championship, and started his Crucible bid with a 10-9 victory over Jamie Cope in one of the best matches of the championship.

”Jamie’s very entertaining to watch, I’m sure the crowd loved it. I was probably the only one in there having an absolute mare, he was knocking everything in from everywhere,” said Ebdon. “It was a really thorough and stiff examination. I need a couple of weeks to recover!”

He did recover in time to beat Mark King 13-9, only to lose by the same scoreline to Ali Carter.

The player nicknamed The Force finished the campaign with a drop of three places down the rankings to No 9.

The previous season was one of Ebdon’s finest as he joined the select band of players to have won snooker’s two biggest ranking titles.

At the Maplin UK Championship in York, he beat Mark Selby, Stuart Bingham and Ding Junhui to reach the semi-finals then produced what he described as one of his best ever performances to beat John Higgins 9-7.

In the final he faced old adversary Stephen Hendry and came from 3-1 down to score a 10-6 victory. That made him only the ninth player in snooker history to have lifted both the world and UK crowns, joining Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, Hendry, John Parrott, Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Williams.

He first reached the final at the Crucible in 1996, losing 18-12 to Stephen Hendry, but gained his revenge on the Scot in 2002 and fulfilled a lifelong ambition.

Ebdon probably prepares more thoroughly for the Sheffield event than any other player, swimming a mile a day and following a strict diet in order to maximise his physical fitness and stamina.

This proved vital as he beat Hendry 18-17 in an epic final, making a crucial break of 59 in the 35th and last frame. "I always believed that I could win it but to actually do it is something else," he said.

He has won five other rankings titles and was also Crucible runner up in 2006, losing 18-14 to Graeme Dott..

Along with wife Deborah and children Ruby May, Ethan, Tristan and eldest Clarissa, Ebdon moved to Dubai in 2005. "It’s a fantastic lifestyle there and a much safer environment for the children to grow up in," he said.

Among the many strings to his bow, Ebdon is an expert on equine breeding and studied Latin and Ancient Greek at school. He is a devotee of Napoleon Hill’s classic motivational book Think and Grow Rich and presented a copy to each of 116 pupils at the school he attended as a teenager, Highbury Grove.

Passionate about music, Ebdon played the oboe at school and has sung on two pop singles.

GSC:

Peter Ebdon was one of the best juniors of his day, winning a £1500 prize when only 16 in the National Handicap in the 1986/7 season. Over the next few seasons he became a regular winner of amateur and pro-am events. The biggest of these was in the 1989 Pontins Open when he beat Ken Doherty to take the title. That season he also won the Rothmans Amateur championship. The following season a clutch of further titles followed along with the IBSF World Under-21 championship. He continued winning in 1990/1and his name was never out of the snooker press. It was consequently no surprise to anyone that he made an immediate impact when he joined the professional ranks for the 1991/2 season along with some 300 odd other hopefuls.

In that season he only failed to reach the final stages of two ranking events, reaching the last 16 of the Grand Prix and qualifying for the Crucible at his first attempt. Sporting a pony tail in those days, he came up against six times champion, Steve Davis, in the opening round and caused a major upset by beating him 10-4 and went on to the quarter-finals. He was, by some way, the most successful of all the new professionals achieving a ranking of 47 at the season’s end and was named the WPBSA Young Player of the Year. Four last 16 places in ranking events in 1992/3 put him into the top 32 at 21st although he did not get beyond that stage.

He did not however have to wait long for his first ranking victory. That came in the 1993 Grand Prix with a 9-6 victory over Ken Doherty. He also reached the Regal Welsh semi-final and the quarter final in Dubai to take him into the top 16 at number ten, adding a quarter-final in the Masters along the way. The following season saw him in his second ranking final, losing out to Alan McManus in Dubai, along with semi-finals in the UK and the Welsh and quarter-finals in Thailand and at the Crucible. He beat Stephen Hendry to take the Irish Masters and finished the season with the Pontins Professional title as well.

1995/6 was to prove his best season so far. Although he did not win a ranking event, he was runner-up in three, including the World Championship where he lost 12-18 to Stephen Hendry who had also beaten him in the UK final a few months before. In non-ranking events he won the invitational Malta Grand Prix, was runner-up in the Scottish Masters and reached the semis of the Charity Challenge, Pontins Professional and the Matchroom League. His ranking soared to his best to date of third. In the next season, despite collecting his second ranking title, the Thailand Open, and winning the Scottish Masters, he lost four opening round matches in ranking events and slipped to fifth.

By now married with a young family, Peter was also spending a lot of time on his horse racing interests which include an intense study of pedigree lines and his snooker began to suffer a little. One semi and two quarter-finals was all he could manage in 1997/8 and it was a similar story in 1998/9 with the result that his ranking fell first to seventh and then to 13th. Things looked up a little in 1999/2000 when he reached his first ranking final for three years, losing out, to Hendry again, in the British Open. This helped to halt his slide down the rankings, and to form the basis for a major return to form in 2000/01.

He started the new season with a victory over Jimmy White in the British Open final and only failed once to reach the last 16. In the final event before the world championships, he took his second ranking title of the season in the Scottish Open and went to Sheffield with high hopes. After two hard fought victories he lost out to the eventual winner, Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarter finals but he was back up to seventh in the rankings and once again a major force in the game.

He began the 2001/02 season reaching the semi-final of the Champions Cup but surprisingly lost his opener to Marco Fu in the Scottish Masters. Reaching the final of the LG Cup where Stephen Lee proved just too good followed a quarter-final in the first ranking event, the British Open. Two more quarter-finals and the semi-final of the Scottish Open were achieved by the time world championships came round. He had also got to the Irish Masters final. At Sheffield he won a tough opener against Michael Judge and then comfortably beat Joe Perry and Anthony Hamilton. He squeezed past Matthew Stevens in the deciding frame of the semi-final to enter his second world final. Just as he had been in 1996, his opponent was Stephen Hendry and this one always looked like going all the way which it did. Peter held his nerve in that 35th frame and lifted the world championship trophy at last. As a consequence he was up to third in the rankings which equalled his best ever six years before.

As often happens after winning the world title, the following season was not as good as Peter would have hoped. He did however manage two ranking semi-finals but nevertheless slipped back to seventh place at the season’s end.

Peter has always been a hard player to beat and some feel that the immense mental effort he puts into every match can sometimes work to his disadvantage. Nevertheless he has now won over £2 million in prize money. He now has four children and these together with his three racehorses take up most of his time away from the snooker table.

Ebdon turned professional in 1991, and, sporting a ponytail, made an impact by beating Steve Davis 10-4 in the first round of the 1992 World Championship; he went on to reach the quarter-finals of the event, losing 13-7 to a resurgent Terry Griffiths. However, it was a run which earned him the WPBSA Young Player of the Year award as a result. His first ranking title was the 1993 Grand Prix [1]. He climbed the rankings rapidly to reach a career-highest position of number three in 1996; he again reached world number three status at the close of the 2002 season.

Perhaps Ebdon's greatest achievement, thus far, was his 18-17 defeat of Stephen Hendry in the 2002 World Championship final [2], having started the tournament at 33-1 [1]. He had previously reached the final of the tournament in 1996, which he lost 18-12 to Hendry, and was also runner-up at the 2006 event to Graeme Dott in which, at 15-7 down coming into the final session, Ebdon won six successive frames before Dott prevailed 18-14. In the semi-final before the final he led Marco Fu 15-9 before being pegged back to 16-16 before Ebdon took the decider, at the end of which he shed tears of relief. His opponents en route to the final were all ranked between 21-25 in the rankings (although Shaun Murphy was defending World Champion and thus top seed for the event), the first time a player has reached the final without facing a top-16 player.[citation needed]

Ebdon is a remarkably focused and determined player. Until recently, his shot times had slowed down considerably; this attracted some criticism – particularly, in his match against Ronnie O'Sullivan in the 2005 World Championship. Resuming at 10-6 down, Ebdon won the first six frames of the evening session, at one stage taking three minutes over a shot, and five minutes to compile a break of 12. Ebdon nevertheless won the match 13-11 [3]. Such performances, though lacking fluency, often appear to break his opponent mentally. Ebdon stated after his victory over O'Sullivan, "When I'm trying my hardest I seem to go slow. I don't do it intentionally". When The Times described his slow play as 'cheating', he attempted to sue them for libel and lost. [4]

Among Ebdon's other career highlights was winning the UK Championship in 2006, beating Stephen Hendry 10-6 in the final [5] – in doing so, becoming only the ninth player to have won both the World and UK Championship. Ebdon's shot times were markedly quicker, and this fluency served him well in defeating the defending champion Ding Junhui and John Higgins en route to the final, and compiling eight century-breaks over the course of the tournament. However, he failed to reach a ranking quarter-final in 2007. His poor form continued into 2008; in the Northern Ireland Trophy he lost 0-5 to Liang Wenbo with a highest break of 32, a result which lead to an investigation of suspicious betting patterns[2][3] by the Gambling Commission. The WPBSA, of which Ebdon is a board member, has yet to announce an investigation of its own [4].

[edit] Career details

Ebdon was only the second player to have made two competitive maximum 147 breaks in professional tournament play – these coming at the Strachan Professional and UK Championship, both in 1992. In the same year, he became the first player to make four centuries in five frames.[6]

Ebdon is renowned for his strict fitness regime in order to condition himself for snooker; he swims one mile a day and has cut down on carbohydrates and sugars in order to maximise physical fitness and stamina.[7]He is a devotee of Napoleon Hill's classic motivational book Think and Grow Rich.

Peter has been criticised in the past for his exuberant outpourings of emotion after winning important frames or matches. However, since one particular outburst after potting the match ball against Stephen Lee during their 2001 World Championship second round encounter – repeatedly punching the air and shouting "Come on!" at the top of his voice - he has toned down his celebrations significantly.

Ebdon is also colour blind. In a frame in which the brown ball is in close proximity to a red, he usually asks the referee for help on which ball is which. During a match against Simon Bedford in the 2008 Grand Prix, Ebdon inadvertently potted the brown believing it to be a red.[8]

[edit] Personal life

Ebdon was born in Kettering, but lived in Islington, North London until he was 18, before moving to Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. In 2005, he emigrated with his family to Dubai.

Ebdon currently resides with his wife Deborah and four children in Dubai. He goes for regular walks on the beach with his dog and is very happy there.[9]

In 1996, Peter recorded a version of the David Cassidy song I Am A Clown. The video was voted as the worst of the year by The Chart Show.[citation needed]

BBC:

Ebdon finally realised his dream last season when he lifted the 2002 World Championship crown, to add to his four other ranking titles.

It was sweet revenge for the Wellingborough player, who saw off Stephen Hendry - the player who defeated him in the 1996 final - in a dramatic final frame of the match.

The epic, which finished in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was watched by a peak television audience of nearly eight million.

However, this year he has failed to build on that success, and that victory came in his last final appearance.

But the 33-year-old is the kind of player who thrives on the big occasions, and it does not get any bigger than The Crucible.

Ebdon is renowned for his fitness regime during the season, which involves swimming several miles each week.

He has also adopted a strict diet, cutting out many luxuries including his beloved Liquorice Allsorts.

The world number three is also passionately involved with the game's governing body.
