中国国电集团公司是在原国家电力公司部分企事业单位基础上组建的国有企业，是电力体制改革后国务院批准成立的五大全国性发电企业集团之一，是经国务院同意进行国家授权投资的机构和国家控股公司试点企业，注册资本金120亿元人民币。
中国国电集团公司从事电源的开发、投资、建设、经营和管理，组织电力（热力）生产和销售；从事煤炭、发电设施、新能源、交通、高新技术、环保产业、技术服务、信息咨询等电力业务相关的投资、建设、经营和管理；根据国家有关规定，经有关部门批准，从事国内外投融资业务；经国家批准，自主开展外贸流通经营、国际合作、对外工程承包和对外劳务合作等业务；经营国家批准或允许的其他业务。
中国国电集团公司实行两级法人、分层授权、垂直管理的管理体制，目前设立了华北、东北、华中、华东、西北、川渝、山东、云南、贵州、广西、新疆11个分公司。
截至2006年底，中国国电集团公司拥有3个全资企业、25个内部核算单位、65个控股企业和12个参股企业。集团公司可控装机容量为4445万千瓦，其中，火电装机容量3978万千瓦，占89.49％，水电装机容量405万千瓦，占9.12％，风电装机容量61.8万千瓦，占1.39％。目前，集团公司在全国在全国29个省（自治区、直辖市）拥有电源点。到2006年底,公司资产总额1880亿元。
该企业在中国企业联合会、中国企业家协会联合发布的2006年度中国企业500强排名中名列第六十二，2007年度中国企业500强排名中名列第六十二。
Established on the basis of partial assets of former State Power Corporation of China, China Guodian Corporation is one of the five largest nationwide power generation groups approved by the State Council of China in the power industry restructuring. It is a pilot state holding enterprise approved by the State council to carry out the state-authorized investment with the registered capital of 12 billion RMB Yuan (equivalent to 1.5 billion US Dollar).
China Guodian Corporation engages in the development, investment, construction, operation and management of generation, and the production and sales of electricity (and heat). It covers the investment, construction, operation and management in the business relevant to its core business, such as coal, power generation equipment, new energy, transportation, high-tech, environment protection, technological services and information consultancy. It is ratified to finance and invest both home and abroad in the light of the relevant stipulations, and to carry out international trade, economic cooperation, international project contracting and international laboring and other businesses which are ratified and approved by the relevant authorities of the state.
China Guodian Corporation adopts a double-level-legal-person and vertical management system with layered empowerment. It established 11 branch companies respectively in north China, northeast China, east China, central China, northwest China, Chuanyu (Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality), Shandong, Yunan, Guizhou ,Guangxi and Xinjiang.
By the end of year 2006, China Guodian has 3 wholly-owned enterprises, 25 internal accounting enterprises, 65 holding enterprises and 12 sharing enterprises. The total controllable installed capacity reached 44450MW, including 397880MW thermal, 4050MW hydro, and 618MW wind power capacity with the rate of 89.49%, 9.12%, and 1.39% respectively. The power sources owned by China Guodian cover 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) with the total generation assets of 188billion RMB Yuan (equivalent to 23.5 billion US Dollar).
