每年的独立日前后（七月四日）历来是好莱坞瞄准的黄金档期，所以早在正式开拍之前，导演沃尔夫冈彼得森（《空军一号》）就将新作《完美风暴》的上映期定在了六月底。华纳公司更是为该片的制作投资超过1亿美元，对撼同期上映的《爱国者》（梅尔吉布森）。梅尔吉布森本来也是《完美风暴》的主演人选，由于其漫天要价而遭华纳公司弃用，所以这次双方都要在票房上证明自己的选择是正确的。
《完美风暴》是根据作家Sebastian Junger热卖的同名纪实小说改编而成，讲述一艘捕鱼船在北太平洋上遭遇百年罕见的风暴，船员们在船长Billy Tyne的带领下，顽强地与风暴搏斗的故事。
