山东大学文史哲研究院成立于2002年4月，其基础为原山东大学文史哲研究所、古籍整理研究所、民俗学研究所。现任院长傅永军教授、党总支书记巴金文研究员、副院长马来平教授、冯建国副教授、李平生教授。
山东大学素以文史见长。20世纪30年代，以闻一多、梁实秋、杨振声、老舍、沈从文、洪深等为代表的著名作家、学者在这里曾谱写过辉煌的篇章。20世纪50年代以来，以冯沅君、陆侃如、高亨、萧涤非、殷孟伦、殷焕先为代表的中国古典文学、汉语言文字学，以丁山、郑鹤声、黄云眉、张维华、杨向奎、童书业、王仲荦、赵俪生为代表的中国古代史研究，使山东大学成为当时海内外瞩目的文史研究重镇。以这些学者为依托的《文史哲》杂志，将山东大学的人文学术地位推向颠峰。但是，随着时代的深刻变迁，和国内其他重点高校一样，山东大学的文史研究也面临着严峻挑战。如何重振昔日的文史辉煌，是山东大学领导和师生共同的课题。“周虽旧邦，其命维新。”山东大学文史哲研究院正是在这一特殊的背景下成立的。她肩负着不可推卸的历史重任，将构成山东大学文史学科一个新的增长点。
研究院设有古典文献研究所、汉唐文学研究所、简帛研究所、汉语史研究所、《文心雕龙》与中国美学研究所、史学理论研究所、科技哲学研究所、民俗学研究所8个二级研究机构；现有独立博士点2个，与其他院系共建博士点5个，共建一级学科博士后流动站3个，硕士点8个。所含专业有：中国古典文献学、中国古代文学、汉语言文字学、史学理论和史学史、中国古代史、科技哲学、外国哲学、文艺学、民俗学、中国民间文学等。现有在职人员37人，其中，教授20人，副教授10人，讲师4人。现有在读博士生、硕士生210余人。
研究院的中心任务是从事高精尖的学术研究，经年累月，研究院在古典文献学（王绍曾教授、冯浩菲教授、刘晓东教授、杜泽逊教授、王承略教授）、古代文学（董治安教授、张忠纲教授、郑杰文教授、徐传武教授）、汉语言文字学（冯春田教授）、史学理论和史学史（王学典教授、张富祥教授）、外国哲学（傅永军教授）、科技哲学（马来平教授）、民俗学（叶涛教授）、文艺学（傅合远教授）以及简帛研究（曹峰教授）等学科领域取得了突出的成绩，形成了独特的研究特色，受到学界广泛关注，其中，文献学、先秦两汉文学和杜甫研究，以功力深厚和富有创新饮誉学界，居海内外领先地位。
研究院实行开放式的办院思路。与海内外多家著名学术机构和高校建立了密切的学术交流与合作关系。
“十年生聚，十年教训。”山东大学文史哲研究院将以踏踏实实的形象稳步走向学术的前沿，在保持已有的传统文史学科之优势前提下，积极拓展与国际学术潮流相吻合的创新型学术研究事业。遵循“人无我有，人有我强”的原则，发挥我院多学科交叉之优势，争取形成与我校文、史、哲三院优势互补的局面，力争在未来若干年内把文史哲研究院建成在海内外广泛受到重视的山东大学最高的综合性文科科研机构，并使其中若干学科或方向位居国内外学术前沿或领先地位，成为国学研究之重镇和文史哲创新型及交叉性学术研究之繁盛乐土。

The institute is equipped with the classical literature research institute, the Chinese Tang institute of Chinese literature, the Jianbo research institute, Chinese history research institute, "Wen Xin Carves Dragon" and Chinese Esthetics Research institute, the history theory research institute, the science and technology institute of philosophy, the ethnology research institute 8 two level of development facilities; Existing independent 2 doctor unit, altogether 5 doctor unit constructing with other courtyard department, 3 post-doctoral flow station altogether constructs, 8 master unit .
