1882年放荡不羁的牛仔时代，蛮荒而美丽的北美西部平原，是一片既自由又混乱的土地。在这里，拓荒者可以任意占有西部平原上任何一块无主的土地，并选择将自己的生命永远留在辛勤的劳作与坚实的草原之上。不过与此同时，也有着喜好自由身的蛮荒骑士。他们以放养牧牛为生，在自由的平原上畅游。查理、苏、莫斯和老板斯皮尔曼，就是这样一只生存在蛮荒时代尾声的拓荒队伍。
对于没有边界可言的新西部，放牧本是自由的工作。但是随着更多拓荒者的来到，土地有了自己的价值，放牧者渐渐成为不受欢迎的对象。但查理和他的伙伴们，却还对这些莫名而来的敌意毫无准备。直到队中莫斯在前往附近的小镇采购补给品却一去不返时，伙伴们才发现自己的处境已经不妙。
当几位伙伴赶到时，镇上的土皇上巴克斯特已经联合警长设下了圈套，将莫斯以破坏秩序为名揍了个半死，并且还毫无隐讳的放下话来：只要斯皮尔曼等再出现在小镇周围，他们就决不会再让他们活着离开。被逼得走投无路的西部牛仔们，也只有拾起武器、并肩作战。即便挣个鱼死网破，也要为蛮荒的西部时代留下自己的血泪与热情。

幕后制作很多人将本片看作是《与狼共舞》的姊妹篇。本片遵循西部片的一切拍摄法则，从形式到内容未越雷池一步，借助一个人的蜕变引发了整个民族对历史的自省。那法度森严的叙事，再配合各具神韵不落俗套的表演，还有那收放自如的摄影，既表现出西部草原广袤无垠的恢弘，又细腻传神地勾勒出人物微妙的情绪变化。
