剧情介绍莫诺奥是一位才华横溢的电影导演，为了表现自己的艺术理念，他准备拍摄一部描写吸血鬼家族的新影片。他对剧组人员格外挑剔，频频更换人选，并亲自挑选了吸血鬼的扮演者斯格瑞克——一个无人知晓的神秘演员，他形象丑陋，性格怪异，只在夜间拍戏。对此，导演莫诺奥的解释是：“这是一位挑剔的民间艺人。”
影片终于开拍了。一切都在按计划进行着，导演对于每天的拍摄成果非常满意，尤其是斯格瑞克的传神表演几乎让所有的演员都黯然失色。但这段顺利的时光并没有持续多久，一晚，摄影师沃尔夫冈突然不省人事，莫诺奥将他送入医院，又找来另一位摄影师。在拍摄间隙，制片格鲁和编剧何里克又神秘失踪。接连的事故引起了人们的注意，莫诺奥在极力稳住阵脚的同时，并没有采取任何积极的行动，似乎一切尽在他的掌握之中。
但失踪事件仍在继续，人们开始陷入恐慌，莫诺奥也逐渐认识到自己早已无力控制事态的发展，便将真相说出：神秘演员斯格瑞克并不是什么民间艺人，而是一个真正的诺斯费拉图族的吸血鬼，让它拍摄这部影片的代价就是让它得到剧组的女主角——电影明星格里塔。
知道真相后，人们纷纷开始考虑如何脱身。但更加恐怖的是，人们发现要结束这场噩梦，只有将电影拍完，并最终满足吸血鬼的愿望。
幕后制作这部恐怖电影继承以往恐怖电影一贯采用的惊悚手段，通过神秘离奇的情节的推进把观众带进恐怖的氛围。吸血鬼的题材一向是西方恐怖电影热衷的题材，但是与以往同类题材影片不同的是本片并不是直观地再现吸血鬼的生活场景，而是讲述导演莫诺奥拍摄吸血鬼电影的故事，随着剧情的发展，人们被告知了一个恐怖的事实：朝夕相处的男主角不是普通人，竟然是真正的吸血鬼，这让所有人到最后都为之毛骨悚然。这种情节的设计和安排，让人观后产生更强烈的恐怖感。
