Here are some of my thoughts on how to be a successul DBA. Hopefully some other expert can shed more light and make this thread useful to new DBAs or DBA wannbes.
1. Solid knowledge of Oracle database architecture, concept
2. Fluent with SQL, at least with most useful DDL, DML
3. Knowledge of operation systems, such as NT, UNIX
4. An Oracle Enterprise Manager expert. (otherwise, try to be an SQL expert)
5. Basic network knowdge.
6. Familiar with how to use Metalink
7. Strong DBA mentalities, such as analytical and troubleshooting skills, can do attitude, no panic under pressure (especially when the DB is down for a 24X7 ops)...
