From School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-The Bergers offer information about both the Arctic and Antarctic. The well-written text describes the varied and interesting wildlife that populates both of these cold spots. For instance, beginning readers will be amazed to find out that some humpback whales must eat four tons of krill per day to survive, and that the male emperor penguin will spend two months literally covering and protecting the couple's single egg, without ever moving or eating. The photos are artistically well done and informative. Overall, this offering is interesting while still retaining a controlled vocabulary. However, the fact that there is no index, table of contents, or list of suggested readings detracts from its usefulness to young researchers. This title could be combined with Jonathan Grupper's Destination: Polar Regions (National Geographic, 2001; o.p.) and Martin Jenkins's The Emperor's Egg (Candlewick, 2001) to give beginning researchers a true understanding of the world's polar regions.
