作者简介
Anthony Ham holds a Masters degree in Middle Eastern politics and worked as a refugee lawyer for three years in Australia. On his travels for Lonely Planet, Anthony has been held up at knifepoint in Cameroon, arrested in Iran and found himself constantly overwhelmed by the many kindnesses from anything-but-ordinary people. Read about his adventures with rats in Learning French the Hard Way (p. 25). Freelance journalist Emma Harris seems to be followed by disaster wherever she goes. A visit to Indonesia was plagued by political rioting, Hungary suffered floods and cyanide-poisoned rivers and England saw foot-and-mouth disease, fuel strikes and transport mayhem the year she moved there. Learn of her bout with malaria in Last Days in Medan (p. 173). In 1977, John Mock set out to walk the John Muir Trail from Mount Whitney to Yosemite, but interrupted the hike half-way in exchange for several years of trekking in Pakistan, India and Nepal. He completed the Muir Trail in 1984. John is one of a vanishing breed of itinerant scholars who believe that travel and experience teach lessons no classroom can ever impart. Note his lesson learned in Bearanoia (p. 151).

From Library Journal
In this anthology of travel disaster stories, many of which are quite humorous, Lonely Planet travel writers on assignment recall the many mishaps some comic, others sinister that they have endured on their travels around the globe. From an interrogation at a Tel Aviv airport, to being attacked by wild animals in Tanzania, to a tourist falling off the pyramids in Egypt, these tales of heartache and despair are recounted for the armchair or would-be traveler. Although the book is well written overall, it is unlikely that it will be as successful as its extremely popular predecessor, Lonely Planet Unpacked. In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks on America, some of the stories, which may be more enjoyable at another time, now seem too depressing or even tasteless. A marginal purchase.
