Mary K. Bercaw Edwardsis associate professor of English at the University of Connecticut, past president of the Melville Society, and author ofMelvilles Sources. As a young woman, she sailed around the world aboard a 38-foot sailing vessel and spent much time in the South Pacific. In addition to teaching and scholarship, she now works high aloft on the only wooden whale ship left in the world, theCharles W. Morgan, berthed at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut.
