内容简介
Brian Kershisnik is the most uncommon of artists. In a culture that applauds the new, the shocking and the transient, Kershisnik focuses his rare talent on central and enduring human values. In the tiny town of Kanosh, Utah, an isolated community of fewer than 200 families, he paints profoundly moving images of people in the quiet but important moments of their lives. Kershisnik: Painting From Life features 100 of the artist's paintings in large-format, full-colour reproductions. Two exceptional authors provide commentary for each piece. Leslie Norris describes Kershisnik and his work, revealing the thought and effort behind each piece, while Mark Magleby presents a "portrait of the artist". Magleby is a keen interpreter of Kershisnik's work; as he has written, "The paintings of Brian Kershisnik offer insight into a personal space echoing our own experience a landscape where life's vicissitudes sometimes delay out well-meaning ambitions". Kershisnik: Painting from Life is the third monograph in Guild Publishing's series on exceptional contemporary artists. Earlier volumes focused on glass artist Josh Simpson and metal artist Thomas Mann.

From Library Journal
This is not so much an instruction book on painting as an exploration of the work of a particularly gifted artist. Kershisnik works in a small Utah town, creating images of people in quiet, evocative moments of their lives. With wry humor, he paints young musicians asleep in a landscape, three girls watching a fourth fly an unseen kite, and a child cavorting delightedly in a graveyard. His style calls on Chagall, Blake's mysticism, and the portraitists of the Renaissance. Three writers add text to this collection of more than 100 Kershisnik paintings. Novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard provides an introduction, poet and short story writer Leslie Norris describes a visit to the artist's studio, and art historian Mark Magleby interprets the work. In the same genre as Paul Hogarth's autobiographical Drawing on Life, this book will enlighten and inspire rather than offer specific advice on brushstrokes. Recommended for larger collections.
