My understanding of English teaching in Chinese Schools ( by Julin )Thanks to Mr. Hu and the teachers who have offered help for my work and life here since I came in February. I am bold enough to show up before so many experienced teachers because I believe through my sincere talk I will have better chance to learn more from you later and make more friends in this new world for me. I appreciate the lectures given by Paul, Afshan and Mr. Hu and I really understand the urgent need of more theoretical knowledge for our /English teachers in the 21 century. What I talk here is the thought only from my own experience, please don’t hesitate to give me better advice.First I think for a good teacher, it always takes more time to think and prepare out of class than teaching in class. If we have more understanding of teaching method, it will help us improve more rapidly and teaching different types of classes freely and easily. Our own experience is limited and using of the texts and reference books mechanically won’t meet the requirements of the new quality teaching reform. There are many ways such as grammar explanation, reading comprehension, listening, oral practice, written exercise and tests for our classes, and we can use many additional aid materials such as pictures, slides, computer, cards, games and activities. What is important is how to use them in class in accordance with the level of our own students and teach them with proper steps from easy to difficult levels.Second it’s of the same importance to give classes vividly and lively, we can question as many students as possible, observe their reactions in class and adjust our teaching ways constantly, try all the possible means to keep them stressed and busy in class. For example when I taught the names of animals in a better class, I divided them into groups of four, asking them to find and think out as many animals as possible and then counting them on the board in groups check the dictionary and find over 30 animals. Then I took out some already made paper sheets and did the game “Are you… ?”, “Am I … ?” to reinforce the memory of the words. All the class participated and they enjoyed it. For elder and more diligent students, games and activities are, possibly, a bit childish and time costing. They may ask for wider and deeper scope of knowledge. Group discussion, oral practice in pairs, brainstorm of certain topics and role-play will also work better for them. For instance, when you come to the unit about “travel”, you may start the topic with questions about how, where, when, with whom to travel and what do you need to prepare for a travel? Collect the information on the board, as much as possible :Clothes /shoesmedicinemapsmoney ticketsflash lightshotelsfood airlines weather report phone numbersand then lead them to the main point you want to teach in this class. About listening and speaking every word or text can be turned into a kind of listening and speaking material, we can ask students to make sentences with new words, make questions with some texts or pictures we can also take some time for the students to watch some foreign movies or TV shows and discuss or do exercises after it.Third, there are problems of different levels for students in a class. It’s important to check up the weaker ones from exercise, dictation, test, and talks and tutor them individually. Words of courage and concern are of great help to them, they can catch up rapidly. Usually some students are good at grammar but weak in reading and writing, so additional materials may be suitable for their home work.. As a matter of fact, every word or text can be turned into a group listening and speaking material, we can ask students to make sentences with new words, make questions with some texts or pictures we can also take some time for the students to watch some foreign movies or TV shows and discuss or do exercises after it.It’s a great step forward of the education reform in China. I insist on the attitude to join organically the Chinese and Western teaching method adapted to Chinese schools. With different environment and education system, our students should be taught according to their levels and characters rather than ESL training. Mostly weak in listening and speaking and strong in grammar and reading, our students should be strengthened in listening and speaking in every class and every grade before they know how to express themselves and communicate with people confidently. There is still a long way for me to go before my great leap. I’ll try my best and truly hope to get help from all of you.Thanks
