THIS IS AN ARTICLE REPLY TO: One Chinese is dragon, while ten Chinese is a swarm.(An article from English Café)
I have mentioned this once or twice but that article forced me to re-mention it again: When I came to here initially, I wrote an article titled by On Internet, in which I just mentioned the tough time I had ever met when I, as 100% native of China, used English when I was on line. Sorry to say that even nowadays I still keep meeting some guys whose comments sound like I am a traitor just because I use English! I really do not understand the so-appeared-to-be strong link between language and Patriotism! This unfortunate condition reminds me another interesting phenomenon: USA, is so-called freedom country, and when I was in college my American teacher from New York, just kept introducing the great “equality of opportunity” in US. Then there is another good and most-frequently quoted evidence: one of the greatest documental works, signifying the foundation of freedom of US: the Declaration of Independence. I do think that most of you have heard this quote: All men are created equal! Halt, pay attention to this my dear friends, all MEN are created equal! What about WOMEN then? No, women are not as equal as men, at least in that great free book. It just gives us this impression. And you can also say this sexual discrimination from another very opposite example: 8th, March., the International Women’s Day. There are seldom men complaining about that they have no such similar holiday, which reminds us that there indeed is a certain not equal between men and women! Ok come back to our topic. When and how can we proudly say that our Chinese are great people and P.R.China is great country? Personally I figure out that it must be at least like these:
1.when one day I happen to mention that I will go abroad again, the first reaction to the other Chinese people is not “Congratulations!”
2.when one day, our Chinese people are just less paranoid about language and patriotism! I am sorry to use the word paranoid but I do think it is suitable here. Personally I think that when people is paranoid, subconsciously it shows that he has ever been treated un-equal or at least he subconsciously think he is not as strong as other so there are some taboos for arousing his paranoid. So I do think it is a bad example! A lot of years ago, when our fathers said our Chinese have stood up! They feel very exciting! But nowadays can you hear such exciting declaration again? NO! We need not, because we have already become greater and stronger. So why we will be paranoid to languages? Shall we fear this simple language? A tool of communication?
3.when one day, we visit any developed country again, it will not take us such a long time to pass the port just because the custom officials check whether our passports are genuine or not. ( it is such as shameful thing to mention that there are so many Chinese tempting to pass the port of EU Countries with fack passports!)
4.when one Sunday, I linger on the street of Norway, Denmark or any such country again, when I happen to meet a Chinese-look-like people, he or she look as happy or as easy as I am, rather than last time when I met them they just frown and passed me such fast. ( the local people there, are very kind, when you greet to them, they greet back but I seldom to it successfully to Chinese people there! And sincerely hope that my experiences in above-mentioned countries are exception ones.)
5.there should be some more but they are out of mind currently
Actually our Chinese are great people, and I do think that the sole question is like this: the sole and most powerful enemy is not American, European, Japanese but ourselves! If we handle /unite all our Chinese together, we will be the most powerful! Let us be open-minded. Let us be tolerant to dissidents! Let us be a free people in a great free country!
