How a Little Girl saved 1,500 People's Lives

Dear friends,
This is the time of the year that the Christian world is focused on the birth of
a remarkable Child known as Jesus and so I thought you might like this quotation by 'Abdu'l-Baha about all children.
"Every child is potentially the light of the world -- and at the same
time its darkness; wherefore must the question of education be
accounted as of primary importance. From his infancy, the child must
be nursed at the breast of God's love, and nurtured in the embrace
of His knowledge, that he may radiate light, grow in spirituality,
be filled with wisdom and learning, and take on the characteristics
of the angelic host."
These words also have deeper meanings, but just now to me it means children needto be lovingly and wisely educated in both the most current science and knowledge, as well as in the core, basic religious truths, which are the unchanging guidance of virtues and values. Science and religion will illumine each other --when they are brought together in their purest and most current forms.
Revealed writing is poetic. It uses a lot of simple metaphors about things thathave always existed, so it can speak to all ages and conditions. Furthermore, somany meanings are wrapped few words, and often reveal new levels of truth according to need.
In order to be able do this, spiritual truth needs to be approached in the same
way as scientific discoveries, with the same method of independent search after
truth, unfettered by old orthodoxies. Erroneous ideas added through the ages should be tested; and those not in accord with science and reason must be discarded. What's left will be the distilled and tested original purity, and
in accord with the original purity of earlier or later revelations to other peoples. This understanding will do away with hatred and war between religions.
There is, in reality, only one ever unfolding great Religion.
As in science, no one should be set up as an ultimate authority. The search
for truth needs to be open to reconsideration and reinterpretation, and then it
can advance understanding according to the times, just as science changes and develops.
The world is changing. Soon everybody will have basic education and be able
to read and search for their understanding of truth for themselves. They need
to be encouraged and allowed to search for meaning, without being fettered by ancient man-made additions that can only breed superstition and cloud core truths.
It's written somewhere else that humanity is "the end of darkness and the
beginning of light." Do you too, like me think this is one more of the many wise meanings of your powerful yin and yang symbol?
The kind of education implied by 'Abdu'l Baha's words, when given from the beginning of life to every child will help to bring into being a new kind of humanity
. When beautiful qualities again become common among us the world will become quite a different place. It will be much happier and more congenial for all; plants, animals and people. We will learn again to treat each other like family, but this time not only nationally, but as one single human race sharing our one home, Earth, fairly and amicably together. We will at last have what we in Canada call "peace, order and good government, throughout the world.
This reminds me of a story that came out of South East Asia last year. A little
tourist about 10 years old, from a far away land, was vacatiioning with her
parents at a big beach hotel in Sri Lanka. While playing on the shore the
child noticed something strange, and remembered exactly what it meant! She had
just learned about it in school from her teacher. A strange mark all along
near the horizon of the ocean is very dangerous! She cried out to her parents
that a dangerous Tsunami was on its way! They swiftly informed hotel management
who acted immediately to clear the beach. Everyone was warned and that day,
that one little girl, with the cooperation of many levels of authority, saved 1,
500 people.
Countless thousands of people were reported to have seen that mark, but not
understood its meaning, and they died. A little girl from a far away and very different country knew what she was seeing and acted. Now there's a powerfuland applicable lesson in that!
