About Reading
Under certain circumstances there are few hours in life more agreeable than the
hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea…Part of the afternoon had
waned, but much of it was left, and what was left was of the finest and rarest
quality. Real dusk would not arrive for many hours; but the flood of summer light had begun to ebb, the air had grown mellow, the shadows were long upon the smooth, dense turf. They lengthened slowly, however, and the scene expressed that sense of leisure still to come which is perhaps the chief source of one’s enjoyment of such a scene at such an hour…
Do you like the wonderful, enticing description of such moments as afternoon tea
? Well, if you are, you must like The Portrait of a Lady, written by Henry James
, as I do for the moment. Such wonderful depictions are flowing everywhere throughout the book. The writing style of the writer is a bit clerisy-like, but once
you get used to it, even the seemingly out-of-place pedantic style itself becomes a charm. It leads you to an alien but becoming wonderland, in which streams of thoughts mellowly gurgle about, sparkling out an enchanting hue on the reader'
s mind.
It’s not the first time that I have been charmed by western literature. Not is
it the first time I have got so impressed and taken that one’s life would be far less interesting, if not banal, hadn’t he/she had books to be his/her cronies
. Once I was asked what difference it would make if one chose not to read instead? Well, in point of this I would like to quote this: Unlike children, adults read for thoughts, feelings and ideas. We are our thoughts, feelings, and ideas; and our thoughts, feelings, and ideas are us. It elucidates all the doubts.
Another one: It is not true that we only have one life to live. If we can and choose to read, we can have as many lives and many kinds of life as we wish. on this I couldn’t agree more. When I met my friend from England, I was amazed by our similarities in terms of understanding varied subjects. His feelings resonated
with mine, albeit that our sources pertaining to which were different: his coming from his experience in real life, mine mostly from works I had read.
Human mind is fascinating. It absorbs far more information that we can possibly
imagine. What’s more, it can’t tell the information it takes in is from your true life experience or from other channels such as reading, or just daydreaming. So if you expose yourself a lot to varied works or sources, your mind will
take all that it can catch, which is mind-bogglingly immerse, and overtly or covertly add all that to its own range of perception.
So personally I never approve that reading literature is a waste of time, though
it doesn’t seem to offer anything tangible for immediate use. What it can offer far surpass that our conscious mind can imagine. The intangible benefits will
illuminate us without our acknowledgement of it, from inside to outside, making
us far more interesting, distinct, and open-minded than ever before. So not satisfied with your current spiritual state yet? Start to read then.
