Dear Louise and others interested,
When you write a story you need a subject you know about and you find interesting. Louise, you already have your subject, -- your brother.
An essay or simple story has three basic parts:
1. introduction
2. body
3. conclusion.
First write down everything you want to tell us about. Just write it as you would talk.
Next, look for an interesting first sentence that will catch peoples'
interest so they want to read more. The introduction contains clues about
what will follow in the body of the article. For instance, if you were to
write about your dog you might begin"
(Introductory sentence:) "In our family we put up with a big, lovable
nuisance."
Clues to what the body of your article will discuss: "He has long,
brown uncombed hair, and no manners when he eats, but he loves us
dearly, and we love him. One night he bravely saved us from a robber!"
(Body:) You begin to tell about the attempted robbery and how
your dog barked so that you all woke up, and how he ran at the burglar
and frightened him with his growls and bared teeth, and jumped on
him and how the burgler ran away into the night.
(Conclusion:) The conclusion will finish the story. It will be related
to the opening paragraph. This ties the story together.
In the story about your dog it would probably go into how no matter
how funny other people may think your dog looks, and how those neighbours
didn't think you should have a big dog living with you in the house,
still you are very grateful for him.
Example: "The same night a thief sneaked into our neighbours'
dogless house too, while the family slept. He stole irreplaceable family
treasures. We believe it was the same man from whom our big, fearless
night protector saved us!"

1. write what you want to say, in your own words.
2. divide what you wrote into
a. opening
b. body
c. conclusion
3. look for a good opening sentence for the opening.
4. look for good closing conclusion, and a good final sentence.
5. write more about it in the body.

Put it all together in the above order. (Some people cut the sentences
apart with scissors and then put them back into the best order by stickingthem together with clear tape.) This is the origin of the term "cut and paste"
is used with computers. :-))
Last: edit and polish your words, and correct any spelling errors. Type
or write it up cleanly. The work is done! :-))
I may write a little more on the subject in a later root article.
