Introduction to the Bath Spa University
Formed in 1983 by the merger of Bath College of Higher Education and Bath Academy of Art, Bath Spa University College counts painter Howard Hodgkin and sculptors Nicholas Pope and Veronica Ryan among its alumni. Along with art and design, courses here focus on education, social sciences, music and performing arts. More than 60% of students are women.
At its peak as a fashionable social centre in the 18th century, the dandy Richard "Beau" Nash (1674-1761) enjoyed considerable influence in Bath. As well as banning pipe-smoking in its public rooms, Nash promoted gambling and dictated that balls should always start with a minuet.
For the large proportion of mature students who attend Bath Spa the college is characterised as small and friendly rather than boisterous - but they may still feel his influence if they travel in a taxi to the main campus, Newton Park, four miles from Bath: Nash is credited with regulating the hustling sedan chair owners of his day and, in doing so, creating the foundations of the rules that govern modern taxis.
Tobias Smollett described with satirical glee Bath''s vibrant contemporary social life and the city, though not the social hive it was in his time or Jane Austen''s, still offers entertaining nights in its pubs, clubs and gigs. If the scene palls, Bristol is close by.
Sion Hill - Bath Spa''s second campus which hosts the art and design faculty and which is located in a splendid Georgian crescent - is about one and a half miles from the centre of the city and some students prefer living there for that reason.
Students at Bath Spa, where many courses work on a flexible, modular basis, benefit from the institution''s rich links with establishments overseas and the diverse student and academic body this has encouraged. As well as its European ties, for example, last year Bath Spa signed an agreement with Dongguk University in Seoul, one of South Korea''s larger universities, to facilitate academic co-operation between the two organisations that will include student exchanges and joint conferences.
