But it will profile a group of highly skilled wildlife vets whose work ranges from the recently publicised Kakapo Recovery, (the kakapo also called an owl parrot is a species of nocturnal parrot endemic to New Zealand) to the importation of gibbons bound for a wildlife park and several cats and cheetahs for Wellington Zoo.
Far removed from your friendly local vet clinic, these highly-qualified specialists spend their time and skill maintaining the health and on-going survival of exotic and native species.
On any given day, they might extract a red panda’s tooth, operate on an ailing tiger, respond to a dolphin stranding or X-ray the inside of a tuatara .The tuatara is a reptile endemic to New Zealand.
Wild Vets travel all over New Zealand and its outer islands, from Northland to work with the brown kiwi to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands to monitor the endangered NZ sea lion. Over 13 weeks the viewer will watch & know the frustrations of working with unpredictable animals in uncontrollable conditions as well as the joy of a successful treatment or a mission accomplished. They will in addition gain an insight into animal behaviour and the bonds which connect us to other species.
