那个本地人就那样继续呆呆地看着我们继续开火。我想这事也不是那么奇怪，考虑到这些家伙见到一把单开刃的刀子都以为是神的作品。这些白痴土著，要是他们不那么愚昧，兴许还可以保护一下他们自己，而我们也就不用冒着丢脑袋的风险老远跑来保护他们。我的注意力被旁边又站起来的侍虫吸引了过去，几台奇美拉不得不再对着它齐射了一次。我命令排里的士兵站成射击队型，一边保持着稳定的光枪射击一边慢慢向着它前进。然后那东西便一跃而起，向畈尼克斯的小队冲去。尽管这家伙象条奥维瑞安眼镜蛇一样发嘶嘶地叫个不停，到底还是被他们的光枪和重矢弹机枪给打垮了。它看起来有些象是从身体里崩溃掉了一样，两条吓人的大爪子也耷拉在尸体上。
我走过去确认它是不是真的完蛋了，对这些该死的泰伦异形，你永远都要谨慎点。它们中有些家伙有着让人不敢相信的重生能力。那东西黑黑的血在草地上到处都是，而它自己看起来的确象是一具尸体。为了保险起见，我用自己的手枪在它的头上又补了六下。
“好了，罪兵们！”我对着这排士兵喊道：“上车，走人！”
有些人于是开始向齐美拉装甲车走去，但是畈尼克斯、莱特斯和几个人一起走到了我的身边，莱特斯先开了口：
“我们想过了，凯齐。现在，我们有一个天大的好机会。我是说，我们现在有一个摆脱这个身份的机会。”
我看着他们，没太明白他们的意思：“你们想说什么？”
“我们是说……”畈尼克斯接着说：“这儿到丛林那只有两里格远，上校永远别想在那里找到咱们，而且那儿有大把的吃的，有遮身的地方，有一切我们需要生存下去的东西。只要现在把奇美拉向南开过去，然后咱们就又是自由人了。”
他藏在头发后面的那双眼睛热切地看着我，并向前迈了一步。
“想想，”他继续说：“再也不是带罪兵了，再也没有上校布置的那些他妈的自杀式任务，再也不用分分秒秒都担心咱们下一刻又会出现在哪个地狱式战场上了，自由，中尉，自由啊！”
我几乎不敢相信自己听到的。我和畈尼克斯一起战斗有个一年了，莱特斯在第十三惩戒军团里也混了差不多两倍长的时间。和我一样，和其他所有的带罪军的成员一样，他们曾经违反过帝国卫军的军法——很严重地违反，而我们的余生也就将在这惩戒军中度过了。我们在一起经历过十几个战场了，都是一个人能够想象到的最可怕的战斗。我们都挺过来了——自杀式进攻、殿后，还有任何你能想到的有去无还的情况。能活到这么久，只靠胆子大和力气大是不可能的，但是，我实在不敢相信这几个家伙还能冒出这么傻的念头来。
“这算是他妈什么计划？”我发作了，他们的爪子也伸了出来。畈尼克斯开始变得恼火起来，我可以看到他的血直往脸上充。如果我不阻止他的话，马上他就会变成一个大麻烦。
“伙计们，你们想一想……”我试图让他们冷静下来：“你们根本没把事儿考虑清楚，真的。天上有艘异形的母巢舰在那里停着，满满装了一船专业进化过的杀人机器，每一只都能在看到你的第一秒内把你活吃下去。现在那些装着它们的孢子还没有象下雨一样从天上掉下来，就是因为我们把这些侍虫一只只都找出来干掉了，它们还没找到基地在哪里，它们还不知道该把部队从哪里放下来。”
“但是我想你们也知道，现在只是拖延时间而已，因为咱们永远没办法把他们全都找到，绝对没那个可能——而且，就算是我们能，只要它们一知道有更多的帝国运输船正在赶过来，可以保证它们会立刻把所有该死的生化怪物都一股脑甩到地面上来。”
“所以，在我看来，你们有两条路可走。第一条是你们的计划，意味着在露天地里逛悠，我知道那里是丛林，但是它们到了地上照样能把你找出来，然后呢，你们能有什么机会？或者，你们可以跟我回基地去，那里起码还有战斗修女的部队还有两千多本地人跟咱们一起顶着。你们自己选吧，不过如果你们不走我这条路的话，恐怕我得让你们用两条腿离开了，要是我让你们把奇美拉开走，上校能活剥了我的皮。现在还是正中午，你们有八个小时，大把的时间可以挖个洞然后等着异形找上门来。”
我看到他们的脑袋逐渐又看得到现实了，如同太阳从一片云彩后面又露了出来。我一直以为我在以前把他们调教得比这更聪明一点。但是现在看起来有些人是永远不长教训的，吃硬不吃软。只是很不幸，在带罪军里，大部分通过“硬”教训学习的人都成了蛆虫的食料。
他们什么也没说，只是默默地转身回到奇美拉那里去了。保险起见，我最后看了一眼地上的那只侍虫。我觉得十分奇怪，因为在这个行星上，任何其他的新鲜尸体扔在这里，早该爬满了食肉蚁，而且天上会招来一群食腐的大鸟在转圈。但是现在，什么都没有。即使是一只臭虫都不会去碰一下任何泰伦生物。靠，整个银河里，这些该死的异型是最让我头皮发麻东西。
