Artur [Arthur] Rubinstein (1887-1982), American pianist, best known as an interpreter of the romantic composers, especially of Frédéric Chopin. He was born in Łódź, Poland, and educated in Warsaw and Berlin. He made his professional debut as a child in 1901, appearing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by his teacher, the famed Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim.
With the German occupation of France in 1940, Rubinstein settled permanently in America, becoming a United States citizen in 1946 and later Americanizing the spelling of his name (originally Artur). He toured internationally, frequently played on the radio, and appeared on television and in motion pictures. His 1971 performance with the New York Philharmonic marked his 71st year as a performer. His autobiography appeared as My Young Years (1973) and My Many Years (1980).
This historic film captures the legendary pianist Artur Rubinstein in rare performance film footage. The first portion of the program features Rubinstein playing:
01. Mendelssohn - Songs without words, vol 6, Op.67: no 4, Presto in C major "Spinning Song"
02. Liszt - Liebesträume S 541: no 3
03. Chopin - Waltz B 164/Op. 64: no 2 in C sharp minor
04. Chopin - Polonaise Op. 40: no 1 in A major, B 120 "Military"
The next segment of the program takes us into the home of Artur Rubinstein with the master performing:
Chopin -
05. Prelude Op. 28: no 8 in F sharp minor
06. Mazurka in C sharp minor
07. Scherzo in C sharp minor, B 125/Op.39
08. Nocturne Op.15: no 2 in F sharp major
The concluding portion of the film is the result of LIFE Magazine's famous photographic story on the great soloists Rubinstein, Jasha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky in rehearsal together. It is an intimate study of genius at work. The trio collaborates in:
09. Schubert - Trio for Piano and Strings no 1 in B flat major, D 898/Op.99: 1st movement
10. Mendelssohn - Trio for Piano and Strings no 1 in D minor, Op.49
1.1 Molto allegro e agitato
1.2 Andante con moto tranquillo
1.3 Scherzo
