1984年底，Duran Duran在结束为时一年半的巡回演出后，发表了同时登上英美排行亚军的新单曲，随后并推出了现场专辑“Arena”，而85年他们则以007电影‘黎明杀机’的主题曲风靡全球。之后乐团短暂分裂成‘Power Station’、‘Arcadia’两个团体，但两组人马依旧在榜上各擅胜场。次年Roger与Andy相继离团，但年底推出的“Notorious” 专辑仍在美国成为白金唱片，同名单曲亦进占前10名，而88年的“Big Thing”专辑则炮制出Top 10单曲"I Don’t Want Your Love"。
Apart from the greatest-hits collection Decade, Big Thing was the lowest-charting Duran Duran album to date, prompting the band to rework their sound for 1990's Liberty. Unfortunately, the group had no idea what direction they wanted to pursue. Liberty features everything from disco to guitar rock, adding elements of Motown, Philly soul, and new wave along the way. The stylistic diversity may have worked if the band had material to support it, but nothing on the record matched their best work -- it didn't even match the finest moments of Big Thing.
