当1981年推出首张专辑并在两支单曲"Planet Earth"(地球行星)、"Girls on Film"(女影星)相继进入英国单曲榜第12名和第五名，进而使得专辑亦在英国专辑榜待了118周，最高曾至第三位，Duran Duran首度发片能有如此不错的成绩，当然除混杂摇滚与电子乐的流行摇滚曲风能够迎合大众乐迷耳朵外，五位团员不论是高大英俊的Simon Le Bon (赛门．雷朋－主唱)、John Taylor (约翰．泰勒－贝斯)或个头稍显矮小却也拥有俊俏面貌的Nick Rhodes (尼克．罗德斯－键盘)、Andy Taylor (安迪．泰勒－吉他)和Roger Taylor (罗杰．泰勒－鼓)，则更是凭借着出色长相与时尚穿着来掳获乐迷(尤其小女生芳心)。
而1978年即成军的Duran Duran，一开始的四位成员仅上述提到的John Taylor和Nick Rhodes，另两位则为Stephen Duffy (史提芬．杜费－主唱)和Simon Colley (赛门．柯利－贝斯；John Taylor那时负责弹吉他)。对于团名取做Duran Duran，想必有许多人乍闻时都会好奇这名字是否有什么特殊含义，其实它只不过是来自一本科幻连环漫画《Barbarella》里的一个邪恶科学家人名Durand Durand，曾在1968年拍成电影《Barbarella》(在台片名《上空英雄》)，女主角为Jane Fonda (珍．芳达)。
虽然'80s年代的英国流行乐坛还有一支比Duran Duran早一年出片的Spandau Ballet (史班道芭蕾合唱团)亦是让年轻女孩尖叫的帅哥乐团，然魅力指数从进榜单曲名次高低来衡量，似乎还是由Duran Duran独占鳌头，尤其在越过大西洋彼岸的美国，那差别待遇则更是让Spandau Ballet要望‘洋’兴叹，因为'80s年代Duran Duran光是进入Billboard热门单曲top 10就有九首(其中两首还是冠军)，而Spandau Ballet则没有一首打进top 20 (在英国分别拿下亚军和季军的"Gold"、"Only When You Leave"则在美国只拿到第29和34名)。
在1985年为Roger Moore (罗杰．摩尔)第七次也是最后一次扮演James Bond (詹姆斯．庞德)的007电影《A View to A Kill》(在台片名《雷霆杀机》)创作并演唱主题曲"A View to a Kill"且分别夺下美英冠亚军后，Duran Duran在名声达到巅峰状态同时，却也开始面临了走下坡。
Everybody has an LP that resides permanatly on their record player, after all I tell myself, there's no point taking it off, you can allways put other LPs on top of it, should you ever consider playing another record that is! Right now, Duran Duran's first offering from 1981, the unsuprisingly named LP 'Duran Duran' is fused to the turntable, I only ever remove it to replace it with another when the vinyl finaly burns out from over playing. This disk is the predictably astounding album from the innovative new wave band that would later pioneer with some of the early music videos. It's one of those disks that refuses to lose its appeal, weather you're having a party, at a disco, or just listening to some disks with friends, this album will easily suit almost any occasion. Also it's helpfull to know this album's track listings changed slightly in the 1983 re-release. It gained the tracks 'Is There Something I Should Know?' and 'To The Shore', curiously my early copy from 81' only has one of these extra tracks 'To The Shore' and hasn't a single mention of being a later release. Probably a half way relese, or something, if anybody knows i'd like to find out.
