经过35年锲而不舍的探寻，以色列考古学家终于在耶路撒冷以南12公里处的一个山丘上发现了已经遭到亵渎的古代希律王的墓地。
据圣经中称，为了杀死襁褓中的耶稣，希律王曾经下令对伯利恒所有两岁以下的儿童格杀勿论。
【以最大考古谜团之一 】
据以色列《国土报》5月8日报道，耶路撒冷希伯莱大学7日晚上举行新闻发布会，宣布希伯莱大学的考古学家埃胡德·内策教授领导的研究队伍发现了统治古犹太国的希律王的陵墓。这一发现解开了以色列最大的考古谜团之一。
为了找到这一墓葬，内策教授从1972年开始就在希律王宫殿的废墟上进行考古挖掘。
根据古犹太历史学家弗拉菲乌斯·约瑟夫斯的著作，大多数研究人员早就认定，希律王就埋葬在他的宫殿下面。但几经发掘，但没有发现他的尸骨。虽然如此，石棺地点和花纹显示它的主人就是希律王。据悉，石棺已经被砸碎，这可能是有人在希律王死后对他进行了报复，时间大概是在公元66-77年犹太人大起义期间。
