“60分钟”澳大利亚版首播于1979年2月11日晚7:30，定位是对当前国际时事的评论。播出几周后即进入收视排行榜，观众对这个播出方式反应热烈，澳大利亚人首次以独立个性和观点——而不是冷淡的观察者——报道国际大事。
借鉴美国哥伦比亚广播公司（CBS）“60分钟”的成功理念，澳大利亚版“60分钟”致力于以“60分钟”独特的方式讲述故事——采访诺亚（Noah），而不仅仅报道大洪水（Great Flood）。“60分钟”从当事人的角度讲述故事，方式轻松、现代，赋于个性，在呆板的时事报道领域创出了一片新天地。
迄今澳大利亚版“60分钟”已经播出200个专题和3500个故事，成为大多数澳大利亚人周日晚必看的节目。多年来，“60分钟”的收视率都超过同时段其它频道的150多个节目，包括英国和美国的剧情剧和情景喜剧。
