Dollhouse是一个秘密的高科技实验室的别称，而Echo等人就是实验室里面的Dolls或者称为Actives。他们被抹去了记忆和性格，当执行任务时他们的大脑又被植入符合任务要求的性格，记忆，各种技能，以及适合任务需要的语言。任务结束后又被抹去，就像被初始化，又回到了原来的状态，像天真的小孩一样。而故事就发生在抹除记忆后的Echo却拥有了自我意识。
故事讲述一个名为Echo (Dushku) 的“活动体”，它是一个地下非法私人组织创造的“生物体”的一员，这些“生物体”可以被抹去记忆而升为“新生物体”，因而它们都是被一些富人或者有权势的人所租用，每次租用它们都会以新的姿态出现，并会按照顾客的要求去做任何事情；无论是成为一个恋人、刺客、客户代表还是好朋友，“活动者”只是按照被设置的指令去完成任务，本集中Echo被雇佣去扮成的谈判专家去拯救一个商人的女儿，同时FBI 特工Paul Ballard 也介入了此事！

A group of agents working for a shadowy organization are programmed with certain talents and personality traits for specific missions. Between assignments, they reside in a compound called the Dollhouse where their memories are wiped clean. When one member of the group becomes self-aware, she starts trying to find answers to who she really is and the company's mysterious purpose.

Echo is one of the "Actives" in the elite and illegal Dollhouse. Through different personality downloads, she plays the role of a lovestruck girl on a romantic weekend, and then a ruthlessly efficient kidnapping negotiator.
Meanwhile, FBI Agent Paul Ballard is struggling with his assignment to uncover information on the Dollhouse. The chase has destroyed his marriage and is wrecking his career, and it doesn't seem that he'll stop until he uncovers the truth.
