西班牙第二共和成立于1931年，共和政府实施了一系列的土地改革，并且实施裁军，关闭军校，这些措施引起了地主与军事将领的不满，也为内战埋下了远因。在1936年，由西班牙共产党、共和党、社会党和劳动者总同盟组织的人民阵线在大选中获胜，国内政治冲突益趋强烈；暗杀、罢工层出不穷。

另一方面，当时的苏联则支持西班牙共和政府，供给物资协助，惟真正奉派至战场的苏联人员仅约700人，主要工作在驾驶共和军购买的飞机与战车。内战中人数最多的外来部队是国际纵队：在共产国际的号召下，由包括中国在内的世界50多国志愿人士组成了这支部队，协助共和军对抗佛朗哥。1939年2月，西班牙政府发布命令，禁止国际纵队参战。由于德、意二国的武力介入，英、美、法等国作壁上观，加之以共和派内部的分裂，共和军渐居劣势，最后一批共和军在1939年4月1日投降。
佛朗哥随后建立了独裁政权。西班牙内战后遭处决的人数达15,000至35,000人，此外尚有监禁、强迫劳动等措施。在美国的支持下，佛朗哥担任西班牙摄政王直到1975年去世。
