Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme producedby the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious alientime-traveller known as "the Doctor" who travels in his space andtime-ship, the TARDIS, which appears from the exterior to be a blue1950s police box. With his companions, he explores time and space,solving problems, facing monsters and righting wrongs.
The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as thelongest-running science fiction television show in the world[1] and isalso a significant part of British popular culture.[2][3][4] It hasbeen recognised for its imaginative stories, creative low-budgetspecial effects during its original run, and pioneering use ofelectronic music (originally produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop).In the United Kingdom and elsewhere, the show has become a culttelevision favourite and has influenced generations of Britishtelevision professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. Ithas received recognition from critics and the public as one of thefinest British television programmes, including the BAFTA Award forBest Drama Series in 2006.
The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. After an unsuccessfulattempt to revive regular production with a backdoor pilot in the formof a 1996 television film, the programme was successfully relaunched in2005, produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. Some development moneyfor the new series is contributed by the Canadian BroadcastingCorporation (CBC), which is credited as a co-producer. Doctor Who hasalso spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including the currenttelevision programmes Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, and the1981 pilot episode K-9 and Company.

Doctor Who is a television movie based on the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Developed as a co-production between Universal Television, BBC Television, BBC Worldwide, and the Fox Network, the 1996 television film premiered on 12 May 1996 on CITV in Edmonton, Alberta, fifteen days before the BBC One showing, and two days before it aired on Fox in the US. The film was the first attempt to revive Doctor Who, the original series having ended in 1989. It was intended as a back door pilot for a new American-produced Doctor Who TV series, and introduced Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor in his only television appearance. Despite being a ratings winner in the United Kingdom, the film did not fare well on American television, and no new series was purchased. The series was later relaunched on the BBC in 2005.[1] The production was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, the only time any episode of Doctor Who has been filmed in Canada.
Although the film was primarily produced by different hands than the 1963-89 series, and intended for an American audience, the producers chose to not produce a "reimagining" or "reboot" (examples of proposed storylines of this nature can be found in Jean-Marc Lofficier's book The Nth Doctor (Virgin Publishing, 1997), but instead a continuation of the original series.
