《无冬之夜》系列采用龙与地下城的方式进行游戏，当初一上市就广受玩家欢迎，此次新资料片强调采用开放式的游戏世界，让玩家享受更自由探险游戏世界的乐趣，同时可以探索众多地下城，资料片也针对团队的游戏操控进行改良，玩家可以创造专属冒险组合。
在战胜阴影之王后，Sword Coast正处在在一个艰难的经济恢复阶段。商会已经开始为了他们自己的目标而不断的利用战后混乱的局面。同时玩家团体将会卷入到这个不稳定的局势当中。为了增加他们的财富，他们可以选择与商会联盟来创建一个商业王国，也可以选择通过抢劫商队，在黑市走私，在Faerun开辟自己的道路。当他们试图扩大他们的影响力时，玩家们会逐渐发现一种新的幕后对抗：邪恶，城府深，狡诈多变。
