Firefly is set four hundred years from today in the Union of Planets, a government established after a bitter civil war. Under the leadership of Malcolm Reynolds, a renegade who fought against the new government, the crew of the Firefly-class vessel "Serenity" struggles to survive any way they can. They fly to the border planets to keep away from the Alliance and below it's radar. This series was described as a "science fiction western" but is different from other space-based shows as it features no aliens.
if you like Firefly, you will probably enjoy series creator Joss Whedon's other shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.
剧情：
这一套集科幻、西部牛仔等冒险风格的电视剧，是由曾获艾美奖提名的製作人 Joss Whedon 於 2002 年製作及在 Fox 电视台中播出。
故事设定在五百年后的未来世界中，讲述由船长 Malcolm Reynolds (简称 Mal) 为首所率领的一艘没有家之太空船 Serenity 於对抗联邦战争之后，在宇宙中飘流的冒险旅程。
在太空船 Serenity 内一起生活的乘员及乘客，在穿梭於被联邦政府统治之星系中的同时，亦要在行星的边疆之间开闢新天地。不论是合法或非法，各乘员为了生存而需要接受任何的工作，而船内的每一个乘客原来也各怀鬼胎及动机，因此这班拥有著不同的过去，以及不同原因上船的傢伙们将需要在达到目的之前，各自隐藏著自已原有的身份。
为了逃避联邦政府的追踪，Serenity 与它的乘员唯有前往许多荒无的疆界行星，亦因为这个原故，当他们面对各种挑战及困境之时，将会採用像西部牛仔般的作风去解决。FIREFLY 所谈及的是他们变化莫测的生活与关係，并於难以预料的环境下寻找著他们自已的生存意义。
本剧虽然曾经因为收视率低而被中途腰斩，但经过各方的努力，终於在上年开拍承接电视剧的电影版本 - Serenity，并预计於2005年9月30日在美国上画
