非洲导演丹尼.库亚特2001 年作品，与众多扬名国际的黑非洲电影偏向关注殖民时代的遗留影响或古老民俗与现代文化的冲突不同,把重点放在了对民族传说的解读与重构上.画面细腻层次丰富,与其历史背景相比场面显得较为单薄,但对古加纳王国的风土人情考证得极为精细,国王和疯子等角色的表演也出乎意料的精彩.剧情在遵循历史剧的一般套路之余完全消解了原版故事的神话色彩而代之以人性的思考,一味忍让逃避的女主角在最后数分钟的爆发使全片的思想境界从戏说历史瞬间提升到了对国家权力的质疑和诘问上,面对结尾出现在现代非洲城市公路上凄苦茫然的西娅,片头引用法国艺术家让.考克托名言:"传说是永存不朽的,相信则有,不信则无"的目的昭然若揭.在看似传统的结构下,从头尾两端射出并贯穿全片的芒刺决定了它不可能只是一粒无害的糖丸. 从结尾军队首领的呼吁:"昆比的人民们,瓦加杜的人民们...."可以查证出本片的背景是公元8世纪末于古加纳王国建立的西塞.通卡尔王朝,国王号"卡亚.马汗",是马里王朝兴起前西非洲最兴盛的王朝,其首都为昆比,而瓦加度正是当地人对古加纳的称呼.与剧中情节相符的是，这一国家信奉蛇神,也确实有人祭的传统,后来因为遭马里王朝入侵而灭亡,少女反抗蛇神并将之斩杀的传说在当地流传甚广，与中国中李寄斩蛇的故事简直一般无二,但从年代上来说李寄的故事早于非洲传说近一千年。
