Born in the fiery crucible of American '90s high school, The Donnas have been putting out records and touring since their senior year. Now on album number six, the belligerent, roaring jallopy of their early work has evolved into a gleaming chrome SUV; slightly more refined but still with a pleasingly irresponsible level of power.
Donna A (real name actually Brett Anderson. Really) has dipped her vocals in sugar without losing any of her ability to spit poisoned vitriol at everyone from bitchy classmates to deadbeat boyfriends and lecherous losers. If it sometimes seems there's a softer edge to the sentiment than on previous records, we're soon reminded of exactly what The Donna's got into this for - 'I hope you remember this 'cos I won't' sneers Donna A on the surely ironically titled 'It's So Hard'.
But elsewhere the almost-title track 'The Gold Medal' is perhaps the most atypical Donnas song yet - the story of a young Donna (it's impossible to imagine that these songs are anything other than autobiographical) calmly walking out on the latest in a long line of loser boyfriends.
Happily undermining their long suffering portrayal as one-dimensional man-eating punk chicks, 'Gold Medal' is the album that should finally show the world that The Donnas - for all their gleeful stunts and mouthy soundbites - are a great deal more complex than the meatheaded subjects of their tunes would think. But don't let that fool you, it's still rock 'n' roll...
