Mastercam系统中，型腔铣削、轮廓铣削和点位加工的刀具路径与被加工零件的模型是相关一致的。当零件几何模型或加工参数修改后，Mastercam能迅速准确地自动更新相应的刀具路径,无需重新设计和计算刀具路径。 利用上述功能，用户可把常用的加工方法及加工参数存储于数据库中。实际加工之前，从库中选取相似的加工方法，对其编辑修改，使其适合当前的任务。这样可以大大提高数控程序设计效率及计算的自动化程度。例如，数据库中已存储有一系列的点位加工方法（包括工序、刀具、加工参数等），若要钻、铰、攻丝一组孔，就可以从库中选取相似的加工方法，适当修改后，直接加工。
Mastercam的一个最大的特点就是把CAD造型与CAM加工刀具路径及数控代码程序的生成集成在一起，实现从零件外形设计到刀具材料选择、刀具路径生成、加工模拟、数控加工程序生成及输出，最后到数控加工设备加工完成的一条龙服务，这对每个做产品模具设计与制造的人员来说是一个很理想的工具。
其工作流程一般包括以下几个过程：
(1) 零件几何造型(CAD)设计阶段：此阶段可利用Mastercam自身的design模块来完成，也可通过软件系统提供的图形转换接口把其他CAD软件生成的图形转换成Mastercam的图形文件来完成。
(2) 加工(CAM)阶段：根据所需加工产品的几何形状确定加工方式后，运用Mastercam系统提供的功能选择合适的刀具、材料和工艺参数等，然后产生刀具路径和生成刀具的运动轨迹数据。之后还可进行加工模拟，以检测进行中的错误并进行修正。
(3) 生成数控加工程序并输出阶段：这是一种后处理的过程。因为世界上有几百种型号的数控系统，如法兰克、西门子等，它们的指令格式不完全相同。因此 Mastercam软件系统应针对某一特定的数控系统生成特定的数控加工程序，才能完成数控加工，得到理想中的产品。
