Joe Sample是50年代后期在Fusion风格流行大潮中，从硬Bop曲风转向电声曲风的诸多爵士音乐人之一。他是The Jazz Crusaders组合的创始人之一，另外三个创始人是长号手Wayne Henderson，高音萨克斯手Wiltion Felder以及鼓手Stix Hooper。The Crusaders与Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers极为相似，只是洛杉矶的The Crusaders组合没有小号手，而且以高音长号为主音而闻名。Sample原先是一个硬摇摆（Hard Swing）乐手，能够出色应用各种和弦和即兴演奏，早期的他专注于使用钢琴演奏，但后来更多转移到了电声键盘乐器，因为当时他们的乐队也正在向Funk爵士风格转变。70年代初，他们把“Jazz”的字样从The Jazz Crusaders中去掉，变成了现在的The Crusaders。虽然他曾经在1969年领头录制了一张不太成功的爵士钢琴三重奏唱片，但仍然被人们认为1978年的Rainbow Seeker才是第一张他真正开始领头的专辑。The Crusaders以高清晰的音乐而逐渐出名，Sample自己为MCA和华纳兄弟唱片公司录制的Pop流行风格爵士乐，通常表现出极度的自我感知和浪漫情调。

对于我来说没有其它话能描述这张专辑上的音乐，Joe Sample是“the Crusaders”乐队的“旋律大师”，他专门负责弹奏这些最美妙的曲调（看看专辑《It Happens Everyday》）。对于我来说，Joe在80年代末期90年代初期制作的三张专辑都相当的精美，本专辑是其中之一（另两张为《Spellbound》和《Invitation》）。这里的每首曲目在你欣赏完毕后将和你融为一体，从第一首的“Ashes to Ashes”直到结束。对于我个人而言，最喜欢“Phoenix”这首，在爵士里没有其它人比Joe弹奏这首钢琴弹得更好的了。一张美妙的专辑，高度推荐！

No other words to me can describe the music found on this CD. Joe Sample is the "MELODY MAN" of the Crusaders and some of their prettiest tunes he's responsible for (check out "It Happens Everyday"). To me Joe made three albums in the late '80's/early '90's that are simply beautiful and this is one of them (the other two, "Spellbound" and "Invitation"). Every track on here will stay with you after you play this CD, from the first song/ title track ("Ashes to Ashes") to the final cut, which is my personal favorite, "Phoenix." Jazz doesn't get any better than this and no one plays the piano like Joe. A BEAUTIFUL ALBUM. ~Reviewer: L. Kelsey (Amazon)
