It hardly seems possible that Sean O' Boyle and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra could improve on their beautiful Symphony of Lullabies Vol 1, which, until this new CD came out, had been putting my younger son to bed every night. The combination of soporific melodies, classic lullabies, and complex musical harmonies provides a wonderful musical experience for parents and children. In this new CD, Conductor and Orchestral Arranger O'Boyle, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, have produced an exquisite collection of songs which are at least as beautiful and soothing as the first volume, and maybe even more so. There are a number of techniques used to make this music so peaceful. The first is the choice of songs, most of which are traditional and very well known lullabies which parents have been singing to their children for centuries. It is very likely that your child will recognise at least some of the songs, which include: "Brahm's Lullaby", "Mary Had a Little Lamb", "Rock-A-Bye Baby", Beethoven's "Song of Joy", "Little Jack Horner", "Michael Row the Boat Ashore", "Baa Baa Black Sheep", "Greensleeves", "Lavender's Blue", "She Moved Through The Fair", "The Water is Wide", and "All Through the Night". There is also an original composition by O'Boyle titled "Music Box", which is very delicate and pretty, evoking the opening of a music box, with its repetitive circular rhythm, harps, triangles, bells, and strings, petering out lightly at the end. By this time your child will almost certainly be asleep, dreaming of quality music, and complex musical arrangements, their brain synapsis connecting and multiplying for vastly increased intelligence! I'm only half kidding. Project Consultant Rick Samuels, Director of Early Learning at Sheldon College, Sydney, claims that classical and other forms of complex music can help develop musical and linguistic literacy. At the very least, the music will should enrich your child's dreams.
Another technique used by O'Boyle to make this music particularly soothing is to slow the tempo of everything, and to include lots of soporific instruments like harps, violins, gentle horns, bells, pipes, and lots of backing bass, to create a wonderful sleepy, relaxed quality. My boys are famous for the sleeplessness, and Symphony of Lullabies gets both of them off to slumberland in minutes. It also works well to soothe and settle the boys, when things are becoming a little crazy, and the kids (or parents) need winding down. It is nice to just play in the background too. When not going to sleep to it, my boys enjoy guessing the songs, and even singing along. Symphony of Lullabies Vol 2 is quite simply, a wonderful CD. Even if they don't turn my boys into little Einsteins (which, of course, they already are), the music is absolutely gorgeous, and its ability to get my little firebrands snoring on the pillow, well worth the purchase price. ~Magdalena Ball Preschool Entertainment
