ARM designed the combined library and museum on a prominent corner of Albury’s Cultural Precinct. The building is part of an overall masterplan by the City of Albury which integrates a number of cultural facilities on the site with a new pubic square and landscape.
The library and museum is conditioned by a number of urban considerations which include: fulfilling a role as marker and corner sentinel to the precinct; acknowledging the surrounding street alignments; being conscious of scale and neighbouring buildings and the creation and integration of public open spaces. This approach allowed us to create separate design strategies for each corner of the site.
We approached the building as the composition of elements and ideas, rather than conceiving of it as a single lump. The building is akin to the collection of loose objects floating in geological strata, where the arrangement of the objects on the site is created by urban pressures and complex internal relationships.
The design is intended to be bold on approach from the street, while also providing a significant backdrop to the new city square. On closer inspection, the building is made by stitching together familiar Albury elements to create a memorable experience: the river, the river bank, the bridge.
