Each set in the series presents a comprehensive selection of the critical literature commenting on the life and works of a leading economist. Leon Walras (1834-1910), widely regarded as the founder of mathematical economics, was appointed a professor at the University of Lausanne in 1870, a post which he held until his retirement in 1892 (when he was succeeded by Vilfredo Pareto). Walras' principle work, "Elements of Pure" "Economics," marked a critical step in the development of mathematical economics. He developed the Theory of General Economic Equilibrium through the construction of four sequential and cumulative theories of exchange, production, capitalization and credit, and circulation and money. Through a system of simultaneous equations, Walras attempted to demonstrate that all prices and quantities are uniquely determined. He also rediscovered the principle of marginal utility, which demonstrated that prices at which commodities are exchanged are determined by the relative marginal utilities of the economic agents and institutions participating in the transaction. These volumes provide students of economics with immediate access to Leon Walras' thought and economics, showing how others have received and modified his work.
