This follows a long tradition of writing in which details of dress, style, and setting were reported with far more realism and detail than was granted to the actual facts regarding the social and domestic position of women writers to express their deep-rooted resistance to their oppression and subordination in society. The romance style was feminized from an early stage by such figures as Lady Mary Wroth (c1587-1651) and Madeleine de Scudery (1607-1701). Adopted as their own, the romantic novel served women writers as a forum for describing the trails of victimized and abused heroines in an unjust and oppressive world. The works collected in this 12 volume set all feature transgressive heroines whose conduct in some way scandalizes or challenges the mores of society.
